The municipalities of Ischia: Barano

The municipality of Barano is the second extension after the municipality of Forio, is rich in sites of cultural and landscape interest, the major attraction for tourism is the Maronti beach, the longest of the island more than 2 km. One of the most famous monuments is the arched aqueduct called I Pilastri which is located right on the border with the town of Ischia. Many of the place say lightly that is of Roman origin for this they call the Roman aqueduct, but we can say that the construction is much more recent, in fact, was built around 1600 in order to provide water to the Aragonese Castle as was scarce and the population was getting larger. As you go towards the town we find Piedimonte immediately after Fiaiano, a very beautiful village for its landscapes overlooking the Gulf of Naples and Mount Vesuvius as well as the other islands. Continuing the road after Piedimonte we find the hamlet of Testaccio last village before arriving at the Maronti. If you take the narrow road next to the Bar of the square of Testaccio after a few meters you can admire the ancient medieval tower very beautiful to visit today the Corafà Civic Museum. Going back you will find a crossroads just turn right and you will be in the road that was once the only access to the Maronti, quietly you can walk it while admiring a beautiful landscape on the beach. Maronti said the largest beach of the island with its large sand and granular, extends from the extreme tip of Sant’Angelo to Punta della Signora, here you can find several bathing establishments where you can rent pedal boats or surf boards, many restaurants erected on stilts where you can eat fresh salads and freshly caught fish. Unique place in the warm summer evenings where you can walk along the beach and lie on the beach to count the stars. Maronti is not only sea but also spa treatments thanks to the ownership of its establishments such as Cava Scura and Olmitello.

Location of the Maronti not to be missed are the Fumaroles, almost at the end of the beach in fact here it is possible to find an area with hot sand at 90 degrees where it is impossible to walk on it but in the surroundings you can feel the hot sand at 35/40 degrees even in half to the sea. Here you can find the only restaurants are about two that have the geothermal kitchen, in fact, thanks to the hot sand foods are placed in steel plates wrapped in cloth bags so I did not penetrate and immersed to a depth of about a meter in the hot sand the time necessary for cooking, after which you can taste this food that has a unique flavor in its kind, rich in aromas thanks to the aromatic herbs of the place, such as parsley, rosemary and basil. Here it is possible to cook several foods but the best ones are fish, molluscs, chicken, potatoes and vegetables. Here long ago on the whole beach you could watch the famous CalaCala, which was not a form of barter between the inhabitants of Barano and those of the Maronti, an exchange of the products of the land with the products of the sea.
